What Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is, and how you get there

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the summit station on the Klein Matterhorn above Zermatt, at 3,883 metres, and Zermatt Bergbahnen calls it Europe's highest mountain station. There is no road and no train to it. You reach it by cable car only, starting from the Matterhorn Express valley station on Schluhmattstrasse in Zermatt, where this ticket's voucher is exchanged.

The first leg is the Matterhorn Express gondola, which climbs past Furi and Schwarzsee to Trockener Steg. There you change to the 3S cable car that crosses the Theodul Glacier to the top, in cabins with 28 heated seats each. Door to summit, the operator gives a journey of around 40 minutes, changes included.

At the top, the Cinema Lounge waits in the Breithorn Tunnel, and a summit lift carries you up to the viewing platform with its all-round view. The Glacier Palace and a restaurant complete the summit. Your ticket brings you back down by the same lifts. The last descent from the summit is at 3:45 PM, so plan the morning around that time rather than the afternoon.

Why this ticket

Two lifts.
One glacier crossing.
A summit made of ice.

This is the cable car company's own ticket: Zermatt Bergbahnen sells it, and it covers the return ride from Zermatt to the top together with the viewing platform, the Glacier Palace and all entrance fees. It starts from $129 and is rated 4.79 from 1,294 reviews. You swap the voucher for a lift ticket at the valley station and ride on the same day.

On the side · the highest station

A mountain station higher than any other in Europe

Plenty of Alpine lifts promise a view, and many deliver one. This one ends where the air is thin and the ground is snow and ice. Zermatt Bergbahnen describes the viewing platform here as Europe's highest, and from it you count 38 four-thousanders and 14 glaciers spread over three countries.

The panorama boards fixed to the railing name every summit and give its height, which helps when the horizon is crowded. To the north the operator points out the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, to the east the north face of the Breithorn, and Mont Blanc far to the west. On a clear morning the list of names is long enough to keep you on the platform for a good while.

None of this asks for climbing skills. Zermatt Bergbahnen states that the platform is open to visitors with no mountaineering experience or equipment, and that it can be reached on foot without any further aids. What it does ask for is respect for the height, which the sections further down this page cover in detail.

On the side · what visitors say

The views and the smooth lifts come up again and again

Read through the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise reviews on this page and two things repeat: the view from the top and how calmly the lifts run. Guests describe the panorama on a clear day as something that moved them, and one calls the rides smooth and well signed, while another found the changes between gondolas confusing.

Travelers also say that they could take their time at each stage, stopping on the way up or down to look at the Matterhorn from closer, and that the café at the summit was a pleasant place for a coffee before the ride back. One visitor who arrived late in the morning found the top inside cloud, and still enjoyed the ride up through the mountains.

The useful warnings come from the same reviews. Visitors advise checking the webcam before you buy, going early, wearing layers and a windproof jacket because the top is cold, and keeping an eye on how the altitude affects your breathing. The overall score is 4.79 from 1,294 ratings; transport scores 4.8 and value 4.4.

On the side · the timetable year

Open in summer and in winter, with a maintenance gap

The summit runs in both halves of the year. Zermatt Bergbahnen's summer timetable for 2026 runs from 04.05.2026 to 31.10.2026, and its winter timetable covers 01.11.2026 to 02.05.2027. The same ticket takes you up in July sunshine or in January snow, and the view changes more than the route does.

Twice a year the 3S cable car to the top stops for maintenance. In 2026 that was from 27.04. to 22.05. and from 28.09. to 30.10., and during those weeks the older cable car runs in its place, so the summit stays reachable. The next spring break on the winter timetable is planned for 26.04. to 21.05.2027.

The lower section changes too. From 28.09. to 13.11.2026 the cable cars Zermatt to Furi to Trockener Steg stand in for the gondola, and the Matterhorn Express returns on 14.11.2026. These dates were read on 2026-10-22 and can move, so look at the operator's timetable shortly before your trip, and allow a little extra time for the changes on the lower section.

On the side · clouds and wind

When the summit sits inside a cloud

High on the glacier, the view is the whole point, and cloud can take it away even on a day that looks fine in Zermatt. Zermatt Bergbahnen runs live webcams at the summit and at Plateau Rosa, and a weather and wind page with forecasts for the top, for Zermatt and for Gornergrat. Look at both before you leave your hotel.

Free cancellation on this listing helps here: a full refund stays possible until 24 hours ahead, and you can reserve now while paying later. The ticket is valid for one day, with starting times shown when you check availability, so keeping a second date free in your plans gives you a real fallback.

If cloud wins anyway, the top still has things to do under a roof. Zermatt Bergbahnen recommends the Cinema Lounge in the Breithorn Tunnel for bad weather, and its admission is part of the ticket price. The Glacier Palace lies inside the ice and does not depend on the view at all.

Above the clouds

The glacier is quiet early in the day.

Pick your date, swap the voucher in Zermatt and ride up while the sky is clear.

On the side · your ticket

Voucher in, lift ticket out, a return ride for one day

This is not a guided tour. You go to the valley station of the Matterhorn-Express at Schluhmattstrasse 123 in Zermatt, exchange the voucher for a valid ticket, and travel on your own. Zermatt is car-free, so reach the station by public transport or by taxi; a free local bus runs there from several stops in the village.

Included are the return gondola ride to the summit, access to the viewing platform and to the Glacier Palace, and all entrance fees. Food and drinks stay outside the price, as does the Crystal Ride gondola, the cabin with a glass floor. The listing is marked wheelchair accessible.

The ticket is valid 1 day, and the last descent from the summit leaves at 3:45 PM. Bring a passport or an ID card along with warm clothes; the listing asks for both. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before your date, and you can reserve now and pay later.

On the side · glass floor

Photographs from the cabin and from the top

The best pictures begin before the summit. The 3S cabins have large windows on all sides, and the Matterhorn appears beside the line on the way across the glacier. Zermatt Bergbahnen says that no gondola passes closer to the Matterhorn than the Matterhorn Express on the lower section, so keep the camera out from the start.

Some cabins on the upper line are Crystal Ride cabins. Three minutes into the journey, at 170 metres above the ground, their frosted glass floor turns clear within seconds and shows the glacier underneath. The Crystal Ride is not part of this ticket, so treat it as a separate extra if you want it.

On the platform the light is hard and bright, and snow reflects a lot of it. Shoot with the sun to one side, use the panorama boards to name what you have photographed, and step back inside the station to warm your fingers between shots. In the Glacier Palace, slow down: the blue light in the ice needs a steady hand.

170m

Under your boots

A glass floor clears 170 metres above the glacier.

That happens in the Crystal Ride cabins, three minutes into the trip, when the frosted floor turns transparent in seconds. They run on both 3S lines, and the Crystal Ride is not included in this ticket.

On the side · dress for ice

Warm layers, good shoes and protection from the sun

The listing asks you to bring warm clothing, warm shoes and snow clothing, even in summer. For the Glacier Palace, Zermatt Bergbahnen recommends warm clothing and closed-toe shoes, because you walk on ice inside the glacier. A hat and gloves weigh nothing in a bag and make the platform far more pleasant.

Temperature falls with height. MeteoSwiss puts the average drop at 0.65°C for every 100 metres, and at almost 1°C per 100 metres in very dry air. The climate block on this page shows the village, where our averages come from; the summit stands far higher and is much colder than those valley figures.

The sun is the other risk. The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health says that at 3000 metres the UV index can climb above 12 in early July, even when the air is cold. On snow, the same office says, between 40 and 90 percent of UV radiation is reflected. Sunglasses, cream and a lip balm belong in the pocket of every visitor.

On the side · into Italy

Going on to Testa Grigia on the Italian border

Above the summit station the lift chain does not end. Since 1 July 2023 a second 3S line, the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II, has linked the summit with Testa Grigia on the Italian border at 3,480 metres. The ride takes four minutes, and the cable car company says it includes the highest border crossing by cable car in the Alps.

That onward leg is not part of this ticket, which covers the return ride to the summit. For the Italian border, GetYourGuide sells a separate ticket from Zermatt to Testa Grigia, from $187. Going all the way to Breuil-Cervinia is the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, which our guide to the second line explains.

Testa Grigia is an official border between Switzerland and Italy, and Zermatt Bergbahnen notes that a valid identification document may need to be shown there. Near the station you can stand with one foot in each country, and the SnowXperience area beside it offers a beginners' slope and snow tubing.

What you want to know, answered briefly.

Is this a return ticket?

Yes, up and back down. The listing includes a return gondola ride to the summit, the viewing platform, the Glacier Palace and all entrance fees.

Where do I start in Zermatt?

At the Matterhorn-Express valley station. Exchange the voucher there, at Schluhmattstrasse 123; a free local bus runs to it from several stops in the village.

How long does the ride to the top take?

Around 40 minutes. That is the operator's figure from Zermatt to the summit, with the changes included.

What time is the last ride down?

3:45 PM from the summit. The listing gives that as the last descent, so start early enough to enjoy the top.

Is the Glacier Palace included?

Yes. Access to the Glacier Palace and the viewing platform is part of the ticket; food, drinks and the Crystal Ride are not.

Can small children ride to the top?

Not if they are under three. Zermatt Bergbahnen does not allow children under three on the section from Trockener Steg to the summit, for health reasons.

Do I need my passport?

Bring a passport or ID card. The listing asks for one, and Testa Grigia on the onward line is an official border with Italy.

How cold is it up there?

Much colder than in Zermatt. MeteoSwiss gives an average drop of 0.65°C per 100 metres of height, so dress for snow even in summer.

Can I cancel?

Free up to 24 hours before. You get a full refund until then, and you can reserve now and pay later.

What if the top is in cloud?

Check the webcams first. Zermatt Bergbahnen shows live webcams and a forecast for the summit, and the Cinema Lounge is its suggestion for a bad-weather visit.

On the side · back in the village

The rest of the day in car-free Zermatt

Most of a summit trip is over by early afternoon, which leaves the village to explore. Zermatt is car-free: private cars stop at Täsch, and from there visitors continue by train, taxi or limousine service. Inside the village you walk, ride the free e-bus or take an e-taxi.

Go looking for the Hinterdorf, the old village, where barns, stores, stables and houses from the 16th to the 18th centuries survive. Many of the barns sit on flat stone slabs on stilts, built that way to keep the mice out of the grain. A slow walk among them shows how farmers lived here long before the lifts.

For the story of the mountain, the Matterhorn Museum Zermatlantis shows the broken rope from the first ascent of 1865, when four of the seven climbers died on the descent. Zermatt Tourism calls the Matterhorn the most photographed mountain in the world, and by evening you will understand why.

On the side · who it suits

Who should go up, and who should think twice

Is Matterhorn Glacier Paradise worth it? For anyone who wants glaciers and high peaks without climbing, with a ticket that includes the platform and the ice palace, it is a straightforward yes on a clear day. Children up to the age of 8.99 years ride free on Zermatt Bergbahnen's own sightseeing tickets, although this listing has its own price.

There are firm limits. Children under three years of age are not allowed on the section from Trockener Steg to the summit for health reasons, and the listing marks the trip as not suitable for pregnant women. The NHS states that altitude sickness usually starts at more than 2,500 metres and is more likely after a fast ascent.

The NHS advises drinking enough water and not drinking alcohol at altitude. The CDC asks people with heart or lung disease to talk to a doctor who knows high-altitude medicine before the trip. If you feel unwell at the top, rest and ride back down; that is what the lifts are for.
