Zermatt is a long way from the lake shore and the big cities, but a single day can still reach the summit station. Here is how the bus tours, the train tours and the do-it-yourself version compare.

The day trip at a glance
A Matterhorn Glacier Paradise excursion from western Switzerland is mostly a road trip with a high finale. The Geneva day trip sold on this page lasts 13 hours, starts from $155 and is rated 4.74 from 122 reviews. It leaves from Geneva Bus Station on Place Dorcière, in front of the Keytours office, where a guide in a red jacket checks guests in.
The bus cannot enter Zermatt. Its record says the coach drives to Täsch and an electric vehicle carries guests on into the village, where there is free time. That matches the rule Zermatt Tourism states for everyone: private vehicles go only as far as Täsch, and the last stretch is by train, taxi or limousine service.3
The summit is not automatic. The record of the Geneva trip lists the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car as an option of the day, which can also be upgraded on site. Read the option list when you book, because the from-price is the starting price of the day, and the high ride is what most people make the journey for.

Two more bus days follow the lake shore with Swisstours. The Lausanne tour picks guests up outside the Lausanne Vennes metro station, across from Aquatis, where the bus arrives at 8:00 am after leaving Geneva at 7:15 am. The Montreux tour meets in front of the CGN loading dock, with the bus arriving at 8:30 am after stops in Geneva and Lausanne.
Their length follows the distance. The Lausanne tour lasts 11.5 - 12 hours and starts from $155, rated 4.68 from 48 reviews. The Montreux tour lasts 11 hours and starts from $155, rated 4.47 from 19 reviews. Both go to Täsch by bus and on to Zermatt by electric vehicle, and both list the summit cable car as an option.
All three bus days carry the same rule about the cable car: babies under 3 years and people with heart problems are not allowed on it, but can still spend the day in Zermatt village. If someone in your group falls into either group, the bus day still works for them, and the rest of you can ride up while they explore the village streets.

The small-group tours go to Gornergrat; the private tour names the Glacier Paradise in its title, so confirm the summit first.
Holders get 50% off Zermatt Bergbahnen cable cars in Switzerland.4
The ticket from $129, or a guided half-day of 3 hours.
Zermatt can be reached in three-and-a-half hours from Zurich Airport and four hours from Geneva or Basel airports.
The option turns a village day into a high-mountain one. From Zermatt, Zermatt Bergbahnen gives a journey time to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise of around 40 minutes, including changes.2 At the top a return ticket includes the Glacier Palace, the Cinema Lounge, the viewing platform and the InfoCube on Trockener Steg.5
The summit station stands at 3,883 metres, which the operator calls Europe's highest mountain station.6 From the platform you see 38 four-thousanders and 14 glaciers in three countries.7 On a day trip, those views are squeezed into the hours between the bus arriving in Täsch and the meeting time for the return, so ask the guide early how long the group stays.
If you travel on your own instead, the cable car ticket sold on this site starts from $129 and is valid for 1 day. It covers the return gondola ride, the viewing platform, the Glacier Palace and all entrance fees, with the last descent from the summit at 3:45 PM. That last time matters on any day trip, guided or not.

The tours from the north are train days, and they go to a different summit. The small-group tour from Zurich starts from $731, lasts 12 hours and is limited to 10 participants. Its itinerary is a 3.33-hour train ride, a 2-hour walk in Zermatt, a 35-minute train to Gornergrat, 80 minutes up there, and the trains back.
Sister tours run the same pattern from Basel and Bern. The Basel day lasts 12 hours, starts from $733 and is rated 4.92 from 15 reviews; the Bern day lasts 10 hours and starts from $731. Both list Gornergrat as their stop, not the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.
One private tour from Zurich carries the Glacier Paradise in its title; it lasts 11 hours and starts from $975, with pickup included and no reviews yet, and its own description features the Gornergrat Railway, so ask which summit the day includes before you book. A Geneva private tour with a Glacier Paradise option lasts 13 hours and starts from $778, also without reviews so far. Both are priced for a private group rather than a seat on a bus.
The rail route is simpler than it looks. Zermatt Tourism says trains run straight into car-free Zermatt and reach it in three-and-a-half hours from Zurich Airport and four hours from Geneva or Basel airports.1 From Visp you change to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which runs to Zermatt without another change.8
Frequency is on your side. Matterhorn Gotthard Railway trains leave Visp for Zermatt every half hour.9 Zermatt station sits in the middle of the village, close to the Gornergrat Railway, and a free local bus runs from several stops in Zermatt to the Matterhorn-Express valley station.1011
A rail pass changes the arithmetic. Zermatt Tourism notes that people who live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein can buy the Swiss Travel Pass.12 Zermatt Bergbahnen gives holders of a GA, half-fare card or Swiss Travel Pass 50% off its cable cars in Switzerland.4 With a pass and an early train, a self-made day can reach the summit and still leave time for the village.
The bus versions of this day spend long hours on the road. That is the trade for not changing hotels, and it is worth deciding in advance which of the two halves of Zermatt you want most: the summit and the glacier, or the old streets and the view of the Matterhorn from the village.
Weather decides how good the summit hour is. A clear morning at the top is a different experience from a cloudy one, and a day trip booked weeks ahead cannot choose. Every listing compared on this page offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which leaves room to move the day when the forecast turns.
Dress for two climates. The average July high at the MeteoSwiss station in Zermatt is 20 °C, while MeteoSwiss puts the average temperature drop at 0.65°C for every 100 metres of height.1314 A light jacket that is enough in the village is not enough on the platform, and the bus will not wait while you buy a warmer one.
If you sleep in Zermatt, the summit fits into a morning. A small-group half-day that meets at the Zermatt tourist information centre starts from $371 and lasts 3 hours, with a guide speaking English and German. Its plan is a 10-minute bus, a 45-minute cable car ride, 2 hours at the top with the Glacier Palace, the cinema lounge and the platform, and the same way down.
A private guided day starts from $772 and lasts 7 hours, with a guide who meets you at your Zermatt hotel at 9:00 am. It combines the summit with a hike from Trockener Steg down to Schwarzsee, and it has 1 review so far.
The lowest from-price on this page is the plain ticket, from $129, with no guide and the whole day to spend as you like. Whether you come by bus from the lake, by train from Zurich or from a hotel in the village, the last ride down sets the end of the summit part of the day.
Above the clouds
Pick your date, swap the voucher in Zermatt and ride up while the sky is clear.
About 3.5 hours from the airport. Zermatt Tourism gives three-and-a-half hours from Zurich Airport.1
It is an option. The record lists the cable car to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise as an option, upgradable on site.
13 hours. It leaves from Geneva Bus Station on Place Dorcière.
The small-group ones go to Gornergrat. The Zurich tour's itinerary has a 35-minute train to Gornergrat and 80 minutes there.
Not under 3 years. Babies under 3 and people with heart problems stay in the village.
No, it stops in Täsch. Guests continue into Zermatt by electric vehicle.3
3:45 PM on the ticket. That is the last descent from the summit given by the standalone cable car ticket.
