A lift to a panorama terrace, a palace cut into the glacier, a cinema in a tunnel and a restaurant: the summit station holds more than a view. Here is what each part offers and how to fit it all in.

Up there, in short
The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise viewing platform sits on top of the summit station at 3,883 metres, and Zermatt Bergbahnen calls it the highest in Europe; from it you see 38 four-thousanders and 14 glaciers in three countries.1 A summit lift brings you up to the platform and its 360-degree view.7 You need no mountaineering experience or equipment, and the operator says the platform can be reached on foot with no additional aids.68
The view is wide enough to need a guide of its own. It takes in the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to the north, the north face of the Breithorn to the east and Mont Blanc to the west.9 Panoramic boards on the platform name the mountains and give their heights, which saves a lot of guessing.10 The Matterhorn itself, 4,478 metres high, rises close by and looks quite different from up here than from the village.11
Wind and light are strong at this height. MeteoSwiss notes that ultraviolet radiation grows by 10 to 12% for every 1,000 metres of altitude, and that snow can reflect up to 80% of solar radiation.1213 The Federal Office of Public Health adds that at 3,000 metres the UV index can pass 12 in early July even when it feels cold.14 Sunglasses and sunscreen belong in your pocket, whatever the month and whatever the temperature.

Zermatt Bergbahnen calls its Glacier Palace the world's highest, and you find it 15 metres below the surface of the glacier.172 Inside there is an ice slide and a glacial crevasse you can walk along.2 The Aosta Valley tourism board describes the same ice cave as reached through a gallery 50 metres long, dug into the ice.18 It is a quiet, blue-white world after the glare of the platform, and voices sound muffled between the walls.
Whether you call it the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise ice palace or the Glacier Palace, the ticket sold on this site includes access to it. For summer 2026 the operator added a photo point that sets the outline of the Matterhorn into an ice wall, and a new ice sculpture of marmots.19 Sculptures, niches and carved letters line the passages, so allow time to walk slowly and look closely rather than hurry through.
Dress for the ice. The operator recommends warm clothing and closed-toe shoes for the visit.20 Gloves help too, since you will want to touch the walls. Groups can book the Star Lounge inside the palace for apéritif parties of up to 25 people.21 A visit of this kind makes a strong ending to a company outing or a family celebration, and it is worth asking the operator about well ahead of the date.

It’s impossible to get enough of this view, which takes in the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the north, the craggy north face of the Breithorn in the east, and Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe, in the west.
The Cinema Lounge sits in the Breithorn Tunnel at the summit, and Zermatt Bergbahnen calls it Europe's highest cinema.3 Admission is included in the ticket price, and the operator suggests it for days when the weather is bad.4 The listing describes short films about mountaineering, the local fauna and flora, the lifts, and ice and snow. It is a sheltered place to sit down for a while and get warm after the platform.
On a clear day the films can wait. On a day of thick cloud they turn the trip around: you still learn how the lifts were built, how the glaciers move and how climbers reach the surrounding summits, while the wind blows past the tunnel entrance. Pair the cinema with the ice palace and a hot drink, and a cloudy summit becomes a full morning rather than a disappointment.
On the way down, the InfoCube on Trockener Steg tells the story of the cableway project; it is open all year round and free to enter.22 It fits naturally into the change of cabins at that station. Together with the cinema, it gives anyone curious about the engineering a clear picture of how cabins came to cross a glacier at this height, and both are useful for children who tire of looking at mountains.

Zermatt Bergbahnen describes its summit restaurant as the highest mountain restaurant in Europe.5 Its peak page puts the restaurant at 3,883 m, while the Alpine Crossing station page gives 3,874 m.2324 Either way, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise restaurant is where you sit down for a hot meal with the glacier outside the window. Food and drinks are not part of the ticket sold on this site, so plan a separate budget for them.
Drinks deserve a moment of thought at this altitude. The NHS advises drinking enough water so that you do not get dehydrated, and not drinking alcohol while you travel or climb at altitude.2526 A beer with a view of the Alps is tempting, yet a coffee or a bottle of water is the wiser order until you are back down in the village, where an evening drink costs nothing in comfort.
There is also a souvenir shop at the summit station. Postcards, chocolate and Matterhorn mementos travel light, and buying them at the top gives them a story. If you carry a picnic instead, keep it simple and take every wrapper back down with you: the wind carries loose paper a long way across the glacier.
The ride from Zermatt to the summit takes around 40 minutes including changes, and the last descent leaves the top at 3:45 PM.16 A guided small-group half-day spends 2 hours at the summit for the ice palace, the cinema and the platform, which is a useful benchmark for your own visit. Add time for the restaurant and a slower pace if anyone in your group feels the altitude.
A sensible order is platform first, while the sky is clear, then the ice palace, then the films and lunch. Take the view while you have it; the indoor sights do not depend on the weather. If the summit is already in cloud when you arrive, reverse the plan and go back up to the platform before you leave.
From the summit you can also ride on to Italy. The Matterhorn Glacier Ride II reaches Testa Grigia in four minutes, and near its station you can stand with one foot in Switzerland and the other in Italy.2728 That needs a separate ticket, since the one sold here covers the return ride to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise only. Our page on the crossing explains the options.
Children under three may not ride from Trockener Steg to the summit, for health reasons that the operator names as altitude sickness.29 The GetYourGuide listing also marks the trip as unsuitable for pregnant women. Families with very young children can still ride as far as Trockener Steg and enjoy the glacier views from there while one adult goes on to the top.
The NHS says altitude sickness usually affects people more than 2,500 metres above sea level, and that symptoms usually start 6 to 10 hours after arriving at height.3031 The CDC advises people with heart or lung disease to talk to a doctor familiar with high-altitude medicine before the trip.32 Walk slowly on the platform, sit down in the cinema if you feel light-headed, and do not hurry the stairs.
None of this needs to spoil the day. Most of the summit can be enjoyed at a gentle pace: the lift carries you to the platform, and the cinema has seats. If you or someone with you feels unwell, the simplest remedy is the next cabin down, which brings you back to the village within the hour. Our altitude page goes into the health advice in more detail.
