A village with no road for your own car

Zermatt lies at the head of the Matter valley in Valais, and its last stretch of road is closed to private traffic. Zermatt Tourism puts it plainly: there are no cars in the village, private vehicles may go only as far as Täsch, and from there you continue by train, taxi or a limousine service.3 Its arrival page says drivers park in Täsch, five kilometers short of Zermatt, and its village walk page dates the car-free rule to 1961.910

The rule covers electric cars too: they meet the same limit as any petrol car, and only taxis licensed for the road between Täsch and Zermatt may drive on.1112 Driving up without authorization can bring large fines, the tourist office warns.12 Inside the village, many places are close enough to walk, and the rest is served by e-taxis, horse-drawn carriages and a free electric bus that follows two routes.1314

So the real question behind how to get to Zermatt is where you leave the car, or which train you board. The practical answers are rail all the way, or the car as far as Täsch with the shuttle train for the final kilometers. A coach day trip from Lake Geneva takes the driving off your hands entirely. The sections below walk through each route, then the short hop from the station to the cable car that climbs to the glacier.

By rail: change at Visp, then stay in your seat

The Swiss rail network does most of the work. Zermatt Tourism says trains run directly into the car-free village, three and a half hours from Zurich Airport and four hours from the airports of Geneva and Basel.8 The one change to remember is Visp, the hub where you board the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which then carries you to Zermatt without another change of train.1 From there the line climbs the narrowing valley toward the village, and the planning is done.

From Visp the trains leave every half hour, and the Visp to Zermatt section is one of the most heavily used parts of the Matterhorn Gotthard network, which reaches from Zermatt via Visp, Brig and Andermatt to Disentis.215 Zermatt station stands in the center of the village, right beside the Gornergrat Railway.16 If you plan to use a Swiss Travel Pass, Zermatt Tourism notes that it is a pass for people living outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein.17

Heavy bags do not have to ride with you. The SBB luggage service lets you check in a suitcase at home or on the way and collect it again in Zermatt, which keeps your hands free for the gondolas.18 One caution for this autumn: the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn's shuttle page, read on 22 October 2026, warns that trains run on a modified timetable from 12 October to 9 November, so look up your connection in the SBB planner before setting off.19

Driving: the Matterhorn Terminal at Täsch

If you come by car, the road ends in Täsch, a town of 1,200 inhabitants on a flat valley floor at 1,449 meters.2324 The Matterhorn Terminal there is the official place to swap car for train: it offers 2,100 covered parking places, tickets can be booked online or bought on arrival, and the shuttle ride into Zermatt takes 12 minutes.4 Leave a little slack in your plan for finding a space and walking through to the platform.

Check your vehicle before you reserve a space. The covered deck has a maximum height of 2.30 m, with an outdoor area for larger vehicles that cannot be reserved.25 Electric cars get their own zone of 131 spaces with 22 kW charging points.21 Dropping someone off is free in the outdoor Kiss and Ride area, for a maximum of 30 minutes, which suits a driver who heads back down the valley.26

The terminal is not the only option: more than 1,000 further spaces in Täsch are run by private providers such as taxi firms and hotels.27 At the terminal itself the station sits under the same roof as the car park, luggage trolleys can be wheeled onto the shuttle, and the building is wheelchair accessible, with low-floor cars on the trains.2829 Park, roll your bags to the platform indoors, and ride up.

How to get from Geneva Airport to ZERMATT by Train

The video starts loading once you tap play.

The shuttle from Täsch and what it costs you

The Zermatt Shuttle runs every 20 minutes from 5:55 to 21:55, then hourly in the evening until 00:30 or 01:00, and through the night at weekends, according to its timetable page as read on 22 October 2026.44 Around 200 trains a day carry approximately 11,500 passengers on this short line, so a missed train is never a long wait.455 Late arrivals after a long drive still find a way into the village.

If you hold a General Abonnement or a Swiss Travel Pass, you need no ticket at all for the shuttle.22 Holders of the Half Fare Card and children aged 6 to 15.99 pay half, while children with a Junior Card and those under 6 travel free without a ticket.46 A return ticket stays valid for the journey back within 30 days of the travel date you chose, so a longer stay needs no second purchase.47

Taxis are the other way up the final stretch, and Zermatt Tourism gives 12 minutes from Täsch by shuttle train or taxi alike.48 Only taxis licensed for that road may use it.12 With skis, a pram and several suitcases, a licensed taxi can feel simpler than a platform; with a backpack, the train's steady rhythm of departures is hard to beat, and it delivers you to the center of the village.

From Zermatt station to the Matterhorn Express

Once you step off the train, the next task is reaching the valley station of the Matterhorn Express. A free local bus runs there from several stops in Zermatt.6 The new valley station has ground-level access and is barrier-free throughout.31 It stands at 1,638 meters, the lowest of the stations on your way to the glacier.30 Ask your hotel for the nearest bus stop when you check in the evening before.

This is also where the ticket sold on this site begins. You exchange its voucher for a valid ticket at the valley station of the Matterhorn-Express, Schluhmattstrasse 123, and the listing itself reminds you that the village is car-free, so you arrive by public transport or taxi. It is a return ride to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, valid 1 day, with the viewing platform and the Glacier Palace included, from $129.

That settles how to get to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise once you are in the village: Zermatt Bergbahnen gives a journey time of around 40 minutes from Zermatt, changes included.7 The last descent from the summit on this ticket is at 3:45 PM, so count backward from that hour when you choose your train from the lowlands. A morning arrival leaves room for an unhurried ride, with time to stop at the stations on the way.

Other ways in: a panoramic train, Italy and coach days

The Glacier Express links the foot of the Matterhorn with the Engadin near St. Moritz in about eight hours, over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels.4950 Its highest point is the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 meters.51 With a Swiss Travel Pass the journey itself is covered, apart from the obligatory seat reservation, and 1st and 2nd class seats can be reserved up to 93 days ahead.5253 It makes a scenic way to arrive if you have a spare day before the ride up.

You can also arrive from the south. The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing joins Cervinia and Zermatt by cable car, and Zermatt Bergbahnen says Malpensa airport near Milan is 2 hours from Cervinia, Turin 1.5 hours.5455 Its own site gives 90 minutes from Zermatt to Cervinia.20 Check the maintenance dates first: until 23 October 2026 only the Zermatt to Testa Grigia and back section is open.56 Carry your passport or ID card, as the summit ticket advises in any case.

Without a car or a rail pass, a coach day out handles the logistics. The Geneva trip lasts 13 hours, runs by bus to Täsch and by electric vehicle into Zermatt, and offers the Glacier Paradise cable car as an option, from $155. A Lausanne version collects guests at 8:00 am outside the Lausanne Vennes metro station, from $155. Both list the cable car as an option, and the Geneva trip can also be upgraded on site.
