One summit is reached by cable car over a glacier, the other by a cogwheel train that has climbed since the nineteenth century. Both face the Matterhorn, and each wins on something different.

The short verdict
Choosing between the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or Gornergrat comes down to what you want from the day. The Glacier Paradise is the higher summit, with its summit station at 3,883 metres, and Zermatt Bergbahnen calls it Europe's highest mountain station.1 The Gornergrat railway climbs from 1,604 m in Zermatt to 3,089 m, and its operator calls the top station the highest open-air railway station in Europe.2
The rides are not alike at all. To reach the Glacier Paradise you take the Matterhorn Express gondola to Trockener Steg and then a cable car across the Theodul Glacier. The Gornergrat is reached by a cogwheel train in 33 minutes, from a valley station directly opposite Zermatt railway station.5 One trip feels like flying over ice, the other like a slow climb through forest, meadows and rock.
Their histories differ too. On 20 August 1898 the Gornergrat Railway, the first electric cogwheel railway in Switzerland, reached its summit for the first time.9 A cable car first reached the Klein Matterhorn in late autumn 1979, and the current Matterhorn Glacier Ride I began operating for the 2018/19 winter season.1011 You are choosing between a piece of railway heritage and a piece of modern lift engineering.

From the Glacier Paradise platform Zermatt Bergbahnen counts 38 four-thousanders and 14 glaciers in three countries.3 The panorama reaches from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the north to Mont Blanc in the west.13 You stand among the ice, close to the Italian border, and the Matterhorn appears as a neighbor rather than as a distant postcard.
From the Gornergrat the railway counts 29 peaks over 4,000 metres and several glaciers, and it calls the Gorner glacier the second longest in the Alps.414 The view takes in the Matterhorn and 28 other four-thousanders, among them the Dufourspitze and the Dom.15 Here the Matterhorn stands alone across the valley, a classic angle for photographs.
Both views depend on the sky. Cloud can sit on one summit and leave the other clear. Zermatt Bergbahnen keeps a live webcam at the Glacier Paradise, which lets you check before you choose.16 On a bright morning either summit rewards the effort; on a doubtful one, look before you buy. Wind matters as well: on the glacier summit you stand on an open terrace in thin air, while the Gornergrat platform sits lower, right at the railway's top station.

Start from what matters most on your day
The railway passes four intermediate stations along the way. You may use your ticket to get off at every way station and then get on again later and continue your journey.
The glacier trip takes around 40 minutes from Zermatt including changes, and the ticket sold on this site starts at the Matterhorn-Express valley station on Schluhmattstrasse 123.6 The final stage is a cable car that crosses the Theodul Glacier in 9 minutes.23 The ride itself is a highlight: Zermatt Bergbahnen says no gondola passes closer to the Matterhorn than its Matterhorn Express.24
The Gornergrat train passes four intermediate stations, and the railway lets you get off at each and board again later, though each section may only be traveled once per direction.22 Its tracks use the Abt rack system, which lets the trains climb gradients of up to 20 per cent.25 Sitting by the window as the train winds upward is part of the pleasure, and it suits travelers who prefer rails to cables.
Opening hours favor the train. The GetYourGuide Gornergrat ticket lists the first train from Zermatt at 7:00 AM and the last train down at 7:22 PM in July and August, and at 6:22 PM in the other seasons. On the glacier ticket the last descent from the summit is at 3:45 PM. If you arrive in Zermatt in the afternoon, the Gornergrat gives you more time at the top.

The Glacier Paradise is built for a cold morning indoors as well as outdoors. The Glacier Palace lies 15 metres below the glacier surface, with an ice slide and a crevasse to walk along, and the Cinema Lounge in the Breithorn Tunnel shows films with admission included.7826 A restaurant at the summit serves food and drinks, which are not part of the ticket.27
The Gornergrat has its own exhibition. ZOOOM the Matterhorn brings visitors closer to the mountain in three zoom stages, and admission is included in most train tickets.20 One GetYourGuide Gornergrat ticket names the exhibition in its price. On the way down, the Riffelsee at 2,757 m is a short walk from Rotenboden station and is known for its reflection of the Matterhorn on calm days.1812
Children change the calculation. Zermatt Bergbahnen does not allow children under three on the section from Trockener Steg to the Glacier Paradise, for health reasons it names as altitude sickness.21 On the glacier side, families with a toddler can go only as far as Trockener Steg, while the Gornergrat train climbs to a lower summit. Check the railway's own rules for very young children before you travel. With older children both summits work well, and the indoor sights at the glacier keep restless legs busy if the clouds roll in.
On GetYourGuide the Glacier Paradise ticket starts from $129 and is rated 4.79 from 1,294 reviews. The Gornergrat railway ticket starts from $163 with 4.67 from 654 reviews, and a second Gornergrat ticket that includes the exhibition starts from $258. Each of these is a starting price for one person, and the final amount depends on your date.
Rail passes help on both mountains. Zermatt Bergbahnen gives 50% off its Swiss cable cars to GA, Half Fare and Swiss Travel Pass holders, and the Gornergrat Bahn gives the same 50% on its round trip.2829 If you want both summits, the operator's Peak2Peak ticket pairs the Glacier Paradise and the Gornergrat on one excursion day.30 Its Peak Pass gives unlimited travel on both lines and to the Rothorn.31
Doing both in one day is realistic with an early start. Ride to the Glacier Paradise first, since its last descent is at 3:45 PM, then take the train to the Gornergrat in the afternoon; in July and August the last train down leaves at 7:22 PM. It is a long day at altitude, so eat properly, drink water and keep the afternoon walk to the Riffelsee short if anyone in the group is tired.
Choose the Glacier Paradise if height, ice and a sense of the high mountains matter most. It gives you the higher summit, the larger panorama by count, the palace inside the glacier and the option to ride on to the Italian border at Testa Grigia in four minutes.1332 It also wins on the starting price on GetYourGuide, from $129.
Choose the Gornergrat if the classic face of the Matterhorn, a train ride and longer opening hours suit your day better. The railway's history, the lake at Riffelsee and the view of Monte Rosa, which is almost 170 metres higher than the Matterhorn, give the trip a different character.33 It is also the gentler choice for a family with a very small child, given the age rule on the glacier lift.21
If you have two days in Zermatt, the honest answer is both, one each morning, with the weather deciding the order. If you have only one, look at the webcams and the forecast the evening before, pick the summit with the clearer outlook, and leave the other for a return visit. Neither mountain is going anywhere. Whichever you pick first, buy with free cancellation so the weather can still change your mind the day before.
